Did I really not blog all of last week? Oops! To say that life is moving at lightning speed this year would be an understatement. For some reason, I feel like I'm living a few days behind! {Please tell me I'm not the only one!}. I wanted to blog about our Valentine fun during the week, but that didn't happen. So, maybe you can use these ideas this week if you were snowed in on Valentine's Day or just tuck them away for next year. :)
We spent our week reading some of my favorite stories and doing lots of fun activities to go along with them. One of my favorite stories for this time of year is called Valenslime. It is a story about a girl and boy who play pranks on each other and is perfect for making predictions! We read it, and made predictions about what would happen next as we read.
We also read Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch, which is such a sweet story! We talked about how characters change throughout a story, then we made our own surprise valentines to deliver to people who work on our campus. The kids had a great time surprising other people!
{Proof that not all charts are cute...sometime you gotta keep it real!}

{Our science teacher, Mrs. Bannerman}

{Madelin had to write about her mom, who happens to teach 2nd grade at our school}

{Mrs. Neal, who works in our office}
Another favorite story was Froggy's First Kiss. The kids went wild over this book! We stopped before the end and predcited whether we thought Froggy would kiss Frogilina. Then, we talked about who our true valentines were and made these super cute Froggy and Frogilinas from Jennifer over at First Grade Blue Skies.

My friend Deeanna has the cutest pack that we used to make these cute mice after reading The Biggest Valentine Ever {the pack is for a different story, but includes this mouse pattern}. We reviewed the characteristics of a good friend and made a tree map together to go with our mice.

Probably my favorite story for Valentine's Day is The Valentine Bears. It is such a sweet story! We inferred how the bears felt about each other by using evidence from the story then made our bear valentine bags that we used to hold our treats and cards during our party.

Our party was Friday and we had a blast. We kept it pretty low key, but the kids had so much fun! We made cupcakes and strawberry floats {which of course were awesome because they had silly straws}. We graphed candy hearts and passed out our valentines to end the day.

{My crazy crew}
We're on to Presidents' Day this week and hopefully it won't be so long before I blog again!
Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
You can get the pattern for the hats here in Gladys' Raining Hearts pack :)
Is it me or do the kids act crazier at this holiday than any other? It has been wild in our class! We have managed to get some fun learning done though.
As promised, here are some pictures of what we've been doing in math...

We worked on decomposing the number 10 by rolling a number, putting that many hearts on our ten frame then writing the equation using the number we rolled and how many more would make 10.
We also worked on subtraction with this cute activity in which we "mailed" valentines to a friend and sang a cute song {that the kids loved!} then figured out how many we had left.
 We also worked on decomposing teen numbers into ten and a number more with candy hearts {we ran out, so we drew our group of ten hearts on the top}
All of these math activities can be found in my super sweet friend/teammate Deeanna's pack here.

We've also been doing some fun things in language arts...

We read Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch and talked about how special Mr. Hatch felt when he received the special package and also at the end when his neighbors surprised him. Then, we each made a surprise valentine for a special person in our school and went to deliver them.
You can get this writing paper here on google docs

Surprising Mrs. Ruthie who works in our office

Surprising our next door neighbor and speech teacher, Mrs. Flowers
The kids went nuts over this! It was so cute to see them get so excited to give their valentine! It was also really nice to see the different people all around our school feel appreicated and remembered. Definitely a good lesson for the kids!
We also talked about nouns this week and made this quick chart. I do this every year because I think it really helps us learn that nouns are people, places, and things once we talk about what we love. We also did a writing activity with this that you can get on google docs here {I forgot to get a picture!}.

Last, we quickly read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose today and made our group and individual sequencing charts. The kids get so excited when we read a new sequencing book!
You can get this here in my new sequencing pack.

That's it guys! I am worn out and am going home to this little sweetie to spend our first Valentine's together.

Really quick post tonight...ever feel like you have a million things to do and don't know where to start?? Of course you do! I think all teachers feel that way most of the time!
Every year, I have my kiddos make some type of Valentine bag to hold all of our treats and cards. This year, I thought it would be cute to make one to go along with one of my favorite stories...The Valentine Bears.
We read the story today and made inferences about how the bears felt about each other. I made the kids give me examples from the story that helped them make that inference.
Then, we made these cute bags for our party Thursday...I love the way they turned out!
You can get the pattern for the bags along with a variety of writing prompts in my TpT store (sorry it's a little late!) by clicking the picture below. It also includes a version of the craft to attach to the writing prompts.

That's it friends...have a great night!!
I had full intentions of getting this blog post written this weekend, but life kind of had other plans. Better late than never, right?
We finished up our penguin fun last week by reading Three Cheers for Tacky and comparing it to the original Tacky book.
We also compared Tacky to a real penguin.

In our writing center, we wrote about penguins and this one cracked me up!
"Penguins don't fly. Penguins eat fish. Penguins puke the on to their mouth for their babies."
We also used our penguin friends to help us practice comparing numbers. The kids took turns being either a fish or the penguin, while the other kids wrote the inequality. They loved this game! {You can get it here}

Friday, we started talking about friends and things friends do and ways they act {I think we all need a reminder about this time of year!}. We made a tree map about friends as a class, then made these cute friends to hold our individual tree maps.

We also started our Valentine fun by graphing candy hearts on Friday. First we sorted our hearts, then graphed them, and did our data page. You can get the graphs and data pages here as a freebie {there are 2 different versions}.

Lastly, congratulations Kelly Stahl! You won my Valentine's pack and Deeanna's Valentine math pack. We will send you them tonight! Happy Monday everyone!
It seems like this year, things start to get so overwhelming! I feel like I am frantically trying to get in all the themes I want to do. While we've been learning about penguins this week, our workshops and math centers have been valentine themed and the kids are loving them!

We are still working on digraph sounds...most of the class is doing a great job with these.
We're also working on beginning blends...these seem to be giving us a little bit of trouble, so we're going to keep practicing.
I'm so happy with how well the kids are doing with stretching out their CVC words...they are so proud of themselves!
Their favorite workshop this week has definitely been Heartbreaker. The kids read the words and decide if they are real words or heartbreaker words. This is a freebie here :)
We've also been loving our new math centers! We're still working on counting groups of 11-20 objects.
We're also working on addition facts to 5.
This year's class seems to have a difficult time with the concept of more and less, so this center is perfect for us to practice that concept!
Last, we're working on adding a number to ten, which the kids are doing really well with.
All of these centers can be found in my Valentine pack that you can see by clicking the picture below.
Want to win this pack? My good friend Deeanna and I are teaming up to give a lucky reader both of our Valentine packs. You can see her pack by clicking the picture below.
It's super easy to enter...just use the rafflecopter below to let me know that you follow my blog (click follow on the sidebar) and Deeanna's blog (click here). We'll pick a winner Friday be midnight, so enter quickly :).
