We've been knee deep in all things winter the past few weeks in kindergarten! When we went back to school, the weather was miserably cold here, so the kids really got to feel what winter is. Even though snow is rare for us, we still love incorporating snow and snowmen in our winter learning!
We started by reading Snowmen at Night {always a favorite!}. Then, we made snowmen to the way we thought they would if they had spent the night having fun and wrote about what our snowmen would do.

We also talked about snowmen in general and what my kids thought about them then made these torn paper snowmen that I love! {You can see the original idea at The Elementary Art Room}

We also read Sneezy the Snowman and talked about things that are good for snowmen and things that aren't good for a snowman. We attached our writing to these snowmen that I *very* quickly threw together {they aren't great, but the kids loved them!}.

In math, we also used snowmen to help us learn about non-standard measurement and measurement vocabulary. We each compared ourselves to our class snowman to see if we were the same height, shorter, or taller. This really helped the kids with the vocabulary as so many of them started by wanting to say that they were "bigger."

 Then, we talked about how we can use items in our classroom to measure objects. We started by measuring an alphabet chart with cubes, then we painted snowmen and measured to see how many cubes long they were. I was amazed at how well my kids did with making sure the cubes were lined up with the top or bottom of the snowman since this was our first time working with measuring on our own.

 Another area we worked on in math was graphing. I really try to do one graph at least every 2 weeks. We graphed whether we liked winter or not and before we did our data sheets, I had the kids talk with their partner about the data on our graph. Then, I wrote some of what they notice. I've really worked hard this year to do this with every graph - instead of just asking questions like, "Which was the most/least, etc." I have the kids generate thoughts about the data. Then, we filled in our individual data sheets. I love the sheet that says "The data didn't get all the way to the top!"  {This is part of my winter pack}

And on a completely different note, like many other classes, we made our New Year's resolutions. One of my sweeties has a brother in 3rd grade and apparantly, they're working on multiplication because she and some of her friends decided to resolve to learn their times tables! I was rolling!

Next week, we're moving on to penguins and I'm so excited! The kids really start loving informational text with that unit! Have a great weekend friends!
Now that I've pulled myself over the depression over losing such a close game in the National Championship {War Eagle} and out of the miserably cold weather, I'm finally back in the blogging swing to show you our new literacy centers this week. I finally finished my winter pack of centers and the kids have really been enjoying them! You can get these centers {along with lots more and math centers} here on TpT.They're on sale today and tomorrow, so go grab them up!
Polar Bear's Snowball Sounds: Working on medial vowel sounds {why are e and i so tricky?!?}
 Brrr! Beginning Digraphs: Determining beginning digraph sounds
Little Birdie's Word Families: Sorting by word families
 Snowman sounds: Determining beginning sounds and writing the correct letter for that sound
Snowy Spelling: Matching CVC words to pictures {some groups are just using the picture cards and spelling the words}
We also started talking about winter changes in science yesterday. We made a winter circle map then used "Snow" paint to decorate it {shaving cream and glue}. You can get the circle map along with a lot of other random things we're using this week here {this is the science/ss pack I made for my team, so there are no directions and it's random, but I thought I'd share}
While we work on a class circle map, I have the kids doing an individual one. This helps cut down on the playing and also keeps them engaged.

 You'll also find a few things for Snowmen At Night in that pack...I'll hopefully be back tomorrow to share our fun with that story!

Yay for Friday!! This first week back has been fun, but the kids and I both are ready for the weekend {I think we all got used to our holiday schedule!}. We had more fun today finishing our snowman unit and even got to play in the "snow!"

We read Snowballs and talked about words that described each snowman in the book, then made a group chart with words that can describe snowmen.
 Then we made these cute snowmen with torn paper and wrote a sentence that described snowmen.
{This idea came from The Elementary Art Room...thank goodness for Pinterest!}

During math, we had a snowball fight to practice decomposing ten. The "teams" threw our paper snowballs until I said freeze then we counted how many snowballs one team ended up with and used our ten frame to figure out how many the other team had. This activity is in Deeanna's pack here. The kids had a blast!

 To make our day even more fun, Mrs. Nolen got the snow machine out for us! What a treat in our 80 degree weather today!

That's all for now...I am a teensy bit tired from my full week at work and I am going to snuggle with my girlie some before we have to get shots Monday :(. Have a great weekend!
Is anyone still out there? This poor blog has been just a little neglected the past few months as I've been adjusting to life with a newborn. I had great intentions of blogging more when I was out of school, but it didn't happen...I'm so sorry! However, I came back from maternity leave Monday (which by the way was one of the hardest things I've ever done!) and we are back in the swing of things in Mrs. Plant's room.
This week we've been doing lots of fun snowmen activities and the kids are loving it. Here are a few things we've done (most of these activities can be found in my friend Deeanna's unit here):

We read Snowmen At Night then wrote about what our snowmen would do at night. We made these cute snowmen to look like what our snowman would look like the next morning :)

 We also read The Biggest Snowman Ever and used it to discuss how the snowmen were different sizes. Then, we painted our own snowmen and measured them with unifex cubes.
{This idea came from Julie Lee...you can see her original post here. She has some great ideas!}
We also used our big snowman to practice comparing height. We each stood beside him to see if we were taller, shorter, or the same size. Then, we practiced drawing snowmen that were shorter, taller, and the same size as ours.

We also read There Was A Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow and practiced sequencing again.
We also did an individual sequencing activity, but I forgot to take a picture! You can get this activity in my sequencing pack here.

Sorry for the randomness...hopefully I'll be back in a somewhat regular groove soon! I'm also working on this and hope to have it posted this weekend...
{Don't you love the frame? Sweet Alisha from The Bubbly Blonde has opened up a new shop to sell frames and papers...click here to check it out!}
Here are a two of the centers I tested on my kids this week:

That's it friends...hope you have a great Friday!
