Whew! Even though we've been in school 4 weeks now, I still feel like I'm living a day or two behind! I always forget how crazy these first months are! We have settled into our routines for the most part, so we're digging in deep in reading and math!
This week, we focused on characters and sequence in reading. We used The Three Little Pigs to help us do this. I don't know why {I guess because I grew up hearing these stories}, but it amazes me how many children don't know classic fairytales! The one benefit though, is that I have a captive audience when I read them! We did lots of activities with the classic version and other versions of the story, but I only got just a few pictures of what we did {you can get these in my 3 little pigs pack}.
We sequenced the pigs and what they used to build their houses.

We compared the wolf from the traditional story with the wolf from The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.

We also very quickly compared the endings of all 3 stories we read {don't judge the chart...sometimes you gotta keep it real and show you didn't have time to make it fancy!}
In math, we focused on the number 4 and rectangles. We used our good friend Pete and his 4 groovy buttons all week to help us decompose, count on, and learn all we could about the number 4!

We also made our number 4 little guys and they turned out great! {these are part of my Nifty Numbers pack}
For rectangles, we sorted shapes and made our rectangle person. My kids look forward to these each week! {These are part of my Shape Up pack}

This week we're moving on to the farm and number 5. Hope you have a great week!
Oh.my.word!! I can not believe how much my kiddos LOVE Pete the Cat! I think they would sing his songs all day long if I let them! This week, we've been reading about Pete and his 4 groovy buttons, which is great to go along with learning about the number 4 and as a quick intro to subtraction. The kids are having a blast!
We gave our big Pete a shirt with buttons to manipulate while reading/singing the story

We used big buttons to practice adding 1 more and taking 1 away on our number line

Then, we practiced on our own number lines

My super sweet friend Bunnee cut all these Petes for her class, mine and Deeanna's! The kids had so much fun manipulating the buttons, retelling the story, and practicing adding and taking away 1.

We love Pete!

Of course, when all his buttons popped off, he still had a belly button!

We used buttons to put 4 on the ten frame

We also read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs today and compared the wolf in this story with the wolf in the original story. This activity is in my new pack that you can see here. It worked so well to color code the strips and the kids did really well with comparing!

Happy Wednesday friends...only 2 more days until the weekend :)
With only 7 days of school under our belts (we were out yesterday for Isaac and of course it was sunny all day and rained when we went back today), I am very impressed at how well my kiddos are adapting to our routines and procedures. They are really doing a great job and we are getting a lot accomplished!

The literacy centers above can all be found in my TpT store:

I hope your back to school is going well....my only complaint is how swollen my feet are! Any moms out there who teach have any good remedies for keeping the swelling down while being very pregnant and on your toes all day with kindergarten kids??
