We had so much fun last week learning about fall and scarecrows. Here's a little random picture collection of what we did at the end of the last week:
Singing our 6 Black Crows Song and using our sticks to decompose
Decomposing 6 with our crows (black beads). You can get this page here on my friend Deeann's blog.
We read The Scarecrow's Hat and talked about what each animal's problem was and what they got to solve their problem.

The kids did their own page of what the animals each got...these activities are also on Deeann's blog here.

We worked on taking 1 away from a number using black beans painted like crows
We made a brace map with the parts of scarecrow...the kids helped with parts of the words. Then, at the writing table, they wrote about their own scarecrow.

We had a busy, fun week and I'm sure this week will be just as fun. We'll be working on Columbus and fire safety. Don't forget to enter the giveaway that Mrs. Mayas and I are hosting...it ends at midnight!
Today we had lots of fun reading about scarecrows and learning about setting. We read The Falling Leaves and the Scarecrow to help formally introduce setting. After, we talked about when and where the story happened and the kids helped to make our anchor chart.

We also worked together to create a tree map all about scarecrows. This was a little tricky for my kids, but they did a pretty good job. We also made these super cute scarecrows to show off our tree maps. The pattern can be found here for free (thanks Mynda Rivera!).

In math, we used our scarecrows and crows to help us decompose more with the number 6 and count on from a given number to 6.
Love how attentive they are!

We worked to figure out how many birds how flown away when given a number of crows that were on the scarecrow.

We counted on from a given number to make 6 using black paint to make more crows (this was made by Deeanna at Golden Gang Kindergarten)
Also, I posted a Halloween letter matching freebie in my TpT store last night. You can grab it by clicking on the picture:

Hope everyone's Wednesday was great! I am off to work on a Halloween pack with center activities...I would love to hear your ideas of what to include!
Today, we had more fun with our fall unit and with scarecrows!

This morning, we read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves and worked on sequencing. The kids did a really good job and while we were doing the whole group chart, I was so proud when some of the kids thought that another child chose the wrong thing to come next and one of them said, "Well, we need to go back and look in the book!"
Our whole group chart...you can get the pieces here (graphics are Scrappin Doodles)

The kids each made their own sequencing page for retelling...you can get this here (graphics are Scrappin Doodles)
We also continued working on the number 6 today. We used scarecrows and crows (beans that Deeanna so nicely painted for three classes!!) to help us decompose the different ways to make 6 while we sang the song, "6 Black Crows." The song was originally for 5, but we changed it to 6 for this week :). Using manipulatives and songs has really helped my kids have a better sense of numbers this year and has really helped with meeting common core standards.
Each child had a scarecrow and 6 crows

We used the scarecrow to decompose, then also used this sheet and used the crows with the number line

This is a page that Deeanna created, and I'm sure she will offer it as a freebie sometime this week. You can see her blog here.

Hope you all are having a great week!
