Ants, Fireflies,and some Math

We are loving our insect unit so far!! Yesterday, we learned about ants and had so much fun!
First, we read Hey, Little Ant. I love this story and so did the kids. After reading, we gave our opinion on why the little boy should or should not step on the ant. Then we wrote about our opinions.

"The boy should not step on the ant because he is friendly."

"The boy should not step on th ant because the ant had a family. Yay! I did not get stepped on!"
We also read an informational text about ants and recorded what we learned on a circle map that we attached to the ants we made.

Today we read The Very Lonely Firefly. We talked about what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story and charted it on our big firefly.
We didn't have an informational book about fireflies, so we looked up information on the computer and charted what we learned. Then, the kids wrote something they learned about fireflies and we attaced our writing to our fireflies.

In math today, we used fireflies (beans painted black with glitter paint on the end) to decompose teen numbers into 10 and a number more. Even though we've done lots of activities like this, something about the glitter seemed to make it stick today! This activity is from my friend Deeanna's new pack on TpT.

We also finished up our Buggy for Math story problem book and craft. These turned out so cute and they were such a great way for the kids to practice story problems! They are doing so well deciding if we should add or subtract.

This craft and math story book can be found in my TpT store. There are 10 story problems {I only used 5 for my kiddos} and there is also an option to use a fact book about insects {you can see that book here}.
Happy Wednesday!

  8. There are insect sprays that you can use to get rid of bugs. However if you use any type of bug spray, you need to make sure that all food is either out of the vicinity or air sealed properly. מדבירים מורשים
